Molecule 02 is a revolutionary fragrance created by German perfumer Geza Schoen in 2008 (the first fragrance of the line, Molecule 01, was released in 2006). 🔬 Molecule 01 versus Molecule 02. Molecule 01 (Iso E Super) caused a sensation in 2006, it was the first fragrance consisting of a single synthetic molecule. But Iso E Super is an unofficial note, it is present in thousands of fragrances as a background component, simply no one had ever brought it to 100% concentration. Molecule 02 with Ambroxan went further, as Ambroxan by 2008 was already part of Dior Sauvage, Maison Margiela Replica and dozens of other fragrances, and Schoen once again «exposed» a molecule everyone knew but had never heard separately.

👫 Escentric 02, the companion fragrance. Along with Molecule 02, Schoen released Escentric 02, a composition where Ambroxan is not alone but surrounded by other notes, vetiver, musk, iris, green tea, nutmeg. The concept of the line is simple, Molecule is a pure molecule, Escentric is the same molecule in a perfumery context. The pair of Molecule 02 and Escentric 02 was released simultaneously in 2008.

💎 The bottle. The Molecule 02 bottle is simple transparent glass with a minimalist label. The transparency is part of the concept, «nothing extra, just the molecule». The metal tube sometimes mentioned is the travel version, not the main design.

🌟 Cult status. Escentric Molecules is a cult but niche brand. The fragrance was a hit in the perfume community, among bloggers and in niche stores, but never entered the mass sales tops like Chanel No. 5 or Coco Mademoiselle. Fragrantica rating is 3.84 out of 5 with 6,700+ votes.

👤 Geza Schoen. A German perfumer working in London. Before Escentric Molecules he was a «ghost perfumer», creating fragrances for other brands without his name being mentioned. Escentric Molecules became his manifesto, «one molecule is enough to create a fragrance». The line has grown to Molecule 05 (Cashmeran, 2020) and the corresponding Escentric 01–05.

How it sounds and wears. «Warm skin after a shower, with a light saltiness and musky softness» is a typical description. Ambroxan gives a feeling of cleanliness and bodily warmth, it is not a «perfume» but the «scent of healthy skin». On some, a light marine note, on others, a musky-sweet warmth.
