Alien was launched in 2005 and instantly became a sensation. It was created by perfumers Dominique Ropion and Laurent Bruyère. The inspiration was the idea of solar, supernatural femininity, mysterious and alluring, like a visitor from another world.

🌸 The fragrance pyramid. Alien’s official pyramid is one of the most minimalist in perfumery history, just three notes. The top note is jasmine sambac, dense and honeyed, with a slight «animalic» depth. The heart is woody notes, providing a warm and slightly bitter frame. 🔗 The connection with Angel. Angel (1992) was the first gourmand fragrance in history, created by Olivier Cresp. Alien became the second icon of Mugler and was created as a conscious counterpoint. Angel is sweet, gourmand and «daytime», Alien is floral-woody-amber, «nighttime» and mystical. Angel in a pink-blue star bottle, Alien in a purple crystal. Angel was inspired by Mugler’s childhood memories of the fairground, Alien by the idea of a solar woman-talisman. Mugler described Alien as «a fragrance for a woman who radiates light», hence the solar concept.

🌺 Jasmine sambac. This is not an ordinary note but Indian jasmine, harvested at night when its scent is most intense. One of the most expensive floral components in perfumery. In Alien it is used in high concentration, which gives the feeling of an intoxicating, hypnotic heart.

🎬 The face of the fragrance. Yasmin Le Bon, a British model, was indeed the face of the original campaign. Later she was replaced by Mariana Klaveno in the Alien Fusion commercial and Dayana Mendoza in the Alien Man commercial. In later campaigns the image of a solar goddess without a specific face was used.

💎 The bottle. The purple amulet bottle was developed, like Angel’s, in the Verreries Brosse workshop, the same one that created bottles for Chanel No. 5. The shape references a gemstone, but with specific symbolism, by Mugler’s design it is a «wishing stone» to be worn as a talisman. Like Angel, Alien is a refillable fragrance through the Source system.
