🏛️ The Legend of Givenchy Irresistible

Irresistible was launched in 2020 and became one of the loudest premieres of the French house of Givenchy in perfumery. The composition was created by three IFF perfumers at once, Fanny Bal, Dominique Ropion and Anne Flipo. The same trio previously created L’Interdit 2018 and its flankers. Ropion is a legend of perfumery, the author of Angel, Dior Homme and Flowerbomb.

👩‍🎨 The last fragrance of the Clare Waight Keller era. Irresistible became the last Givenchy fragrance created with the involvement of Clare Waight Keller, the house’s first female creative director in 2017–2020. She left Givenchy in the spring of 2020, just a few months after the fragrance’s launch. Before her the creative director was Riccardo Tisci, after her Matthew Williams.

🌸 The fragrance pyramid. Top notes are pear and ambrette. The heart is rose and iris. The base is musk and Virginia cedar. The fragrance belongs to the floral-fruity group. The composition uses Rose Essential LMR Damascena, an essential oil of Damask rose grown on the slopes of the Isparta mountains in Turkey at an altitude of 1,300 meters. Buds are harvested at dawn, and the oil is obtained by re-distilling the «pomace», which gives a special freshness with dark and tobacco shades. This ingredient is one of the most expensive in mass-luxury perfumery. According to Fragrantica reviews, iris (22%) and rose (22%) sound brightest, followed by pear (20%) and musk (17%). Ambrette and cedar are noticeably weaker.

🎬 The campaign. The face of Irresistible became British model Fran Summers, who regularly participated in Givenchy shows and embodied the «free, fiery and independent» character of the fragrance. The commercial was directed by Manu Cossu, and the campaign photography was shot by Harley Weir, one of the most sought-after fashion photographers in Britain. In the video Fran Summers dances in a ballroom under the Parisian sky, joined by a team of three dancers, Larsen Thompson, Ambroise Mendy and Léa Elui. The concept is «free dance» as a metaphor for irresistibility. In 2021 Givenchy launched the international contest #Irresistibleisyou, participants had to post a 15-second dance video with the hashtag, and three winners from around the world joined Fran Summers’ dance team and became ambassadors of the digital campaign for the launch of Irresistible EDT. The motto is «Everyone is irresistible in their own way».

💎 The bottle. The Prism design, a square silhouette with rounded corners, the back is covered with a textured faceted pattern that refracts light like a gemstone. The cap is rose gold with an engraving of four letters «G», not just the house logo. The neck is tied with a pink ribbon. This is a reference to the iconic Prisme aesthetic from Givenchy makeup. The 100 ml bottle is the only one in the line with refill capability, a 150 ml refill is sold separately and costs less than a full-size bottle, part of Givenchy’s sustainability strategy.

🔗 Evolution from Very Irresistible. Irresistible 2020 is not the first fragrance with this name. It was preceded by the legendary line Very Irresistible (2003), whose face was Liv Tyler and later Amanda Seyfried. The Very Irresistible line existed for almost 20 years and spawned dozens of flankers. The new Irresistible 2020 took its place but with a completely different aesthetic, instead of multi-varietal rose and anise, pear, iris and musk.

In Fragrantica reviews the musky-powdery finale of Irresistible is regularly compared to Narciso Rodriguez fragrances, especially at the stage when the pear leaves and «rose with musk» remains. When over-applied, pear and musk «collapse into cotton candy», which is compared to Fantasy by Britney Spears.
