Women's Perfume Essens W181 — a Fragrance Inspired by Givenchy L'Interdit
An oriental-floral fragrance — sensual, mysterious and utterly feminine
🏛️ The Legend of Givenchy L’Interdit
L’Interdit is one of the most legendary fragrances in the history of perfumery. The first version was created in 1957 specifically for actress Audrey Hepburn, the muse and close friend of Hubert de Givenchy. The original was created by perfumer Edmond Roudnitska, the same one who created Diorissimo and Rochas Femme, a figure of the first magnitude in perfumery. His wife Thérèse Roudnitska was also a perfumer, the author of Demi-Jour for Hermès and Pause for Givenchy. Hepburn wore L’Interdit for several years as her personal fragrance, and when Givenchy proposed releasing it for sale, she allegedly replied «Je vous l’interdis!» («I forbid you to do it!»), hence the name.
🌸 The pyramid of the modern version. The modern version of Givenchy L’Interdit, launched in 2018, was reimagined by perfumers Dominique Ropion, Anne Flipo and Fanny Bal. Ropion appears in our series for the fifth time, after Lady Million, Alien, Olympéa and La Vie Est Belle. Flipo is also on her fifth, after Lady Million, La Vie Est Belle, Olympéa and Because It’s You. Fanny Bal is the youngest in the team, a Givaudan perfumer, known as the co-author of YSL Libre Intense and several niche projects. The pyramid is as follows. Top notes are bergamot and mandarin. The heart is tuberose, orange blossom and jasmine. The base is patchouli, vetiver and amber. The main signature of the fragrance is tuberose. This is not a «creamy tuberose» from gourmand compositions but a cold, green, almost hypnotic one, like the tuberose in Carnal Flower by Frédéric Malle or Do Son by Diptyque. It is precisely the contrast of this «cold» tuberose with warm amber and patchouli that creates the drama of the «forbidden» fragrance. Mandarin in the top notes gives a soft citrus start, less sharp than bergamot.
💎 The bottle. Heavy transparent glass with precise geometry, a straight, almost architectural silhouette, without curves. The cap is matte black. On the bottle is not just a «ribbon» but an architectural element of four letters G (Givenchy) that wraps around the neck of the bottle, the signature «4 G» pattern of the house, used in Givenchy clothing and accessories since the 1950s. This is the detail that connects the bottle with the fashion heritage of the house. The design was developed by the internal Givenchy team under the creative director.
🎬 The face of the campaign. The face of the campaign became Marine Vacth, a French model and actress known for the film «Young & Beautiful» (2013, François Ozon). The commercial was directed by Louis Leterrier, director of «The Incredible Hulk» and «Transporter 2». The concept is as follows, Vacth balances on the edge of a skyscraper roof, a metaphor for «living on the edge, forbidding yourself nothing».
How it sounds and wears. «Cold tuberose on warm amber and patchouli» is a recognizable description. The tuberose here is «expensive, cinematic», according to user descriptions, a cold start, a warm base, and between them a dramatic contrast. Concentration is Eau de Parfum. Longevity 8–10 hours, noticeable sillage. Fragrantica rating is 4.06 out of 5 with 10,200+ votes.
⏳ The line. L’Interdit 2018 has spawned one of the most successful flanker lines of Givenchy. L’Interdit Intense (2020, with praline and vanilla), L’Interdit Eau de Toilette (2021, with neroli), L’Interdit Rouge (2022, with ginger and cocoa), L’Interdit Noir (2023, with coffee and oud), L’Interdit Parfum (2024, concentrated version). The 2018 original remains the reference point.
📖 The Story of Four Notes
Bergamot — a sunny citrus note with noble tartness. In the opening of W181 it gives the composition freshness and energy, making the start bright and sparkling.
Tuberose — the queen of floral notes. Its creamy, sensual aroma with a hint of exoticism creates a feeling of luxury and femininity. In the heart of the composition it sounds especially captivating.
Patchouli — a spicy earthy note with a woody character. In the base it adds depth and mystery to the fragrance, and together with vetiver and amber it creates that recognizable oriental trail.
Caramel — a gourmand note with soft sweetness. In the base, together with vanilla, it gives the fragrance warmth and comfort, making the trail enveloping and memorable.
👤 The Woman of W181
She is sensual and mysterious. There is depth in her gaze, mystery in her smile. She is not afraid to be herself and does not play by anyone else's rules. Her charm attracts, and her strength of character inspires.
Deep colors, velvet, lace, elegant jewelry and evening looks suit her. She loves art, travel and moments when she can be truly herself without looking back at others. Her style is sensuality without vulgarity, luxury without provocation.
Essens W181 stays with her all day: in the morning it opens with bergamot, pear and cherry; during the day it reveals a floral heart with tuberose, orange blossom and jasmine; in the evening it warms with patchouli, vetiver, amber, caramel and vanilla. This is a companion fragrance for those who value a bright yet noble presentation.

💡 How to Use
- Moisturize your skin before applying. On dry skin, the fragrance fades faster than on moisturized skin.
- Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck behind the ears, inner elbows. The skin is warmer there, so the scent develops more actively.
- Do not rub after applying. This destroys the molecules and shortens the life of the fragrance.
- Keep the bottle in a dark place. Light and heat break down the composition.
- Add a drop to your hair or scarf. Fabric holds the scent longer than skin.
- Store the bottle properly — tightly closed, away from windows and radiators.
⚠️ Precautions
- For external use only.
- Before first use, perform a patch test on a small area of skin (inner wrist).
- Do not apply to damaged or irritated skin.
- Avoid contact with eyes. If contact occurs, rinse with water.
- Discontinue use if an allergic reaction occurs.
- Keep out of reach of children and away from fire sources.
- Contains allergens — the list is indicated in the composition. Individual intolerance is possible.
