This fragrance was launched in 1992 and caused a genuine revolution in the world of perfumery. The composition was created by perfumers Olivier Cresp and Yves de Chiris, to whom Thierry Mugler gave a seemingly impossible task — to create a fragrance that smells so delicious you want to eat it.

🍬 500 trials and childhood memories. This is not hyperbole — Cresp created around 500 trial formulas before Mugler approved the final version. In those years, aquatic and floral fragrances were in fashion, and Mugler rejected everything that sounded «like everyone else». The breakthrough came when the designer shared his childhood memories — cotton candy at the fairground, his grandmother’s chocolate cakes, praline. Cresp introduced an overdose of ethyl maltol — a molecule that conveys the scent of burnt sugar — which was unprecedented for perfumery at the time.

🌸 The fragrance pyramid. Top notes are cotton candy, coconut, black currant leaf, melon, jasmine, bergamot, pineapple and mandarin. The heart is honey, red berries, blackberry, plum, apricot, peach, jasmine, nutmeg, caraway, orchid, rose and lily-of-the-valley. The base is patchouli, dark chocolate, caramel, vanilla, tonka bean, amber, musk and sandalwood. Not a single classic floral note serves as the main one — rose and jasmine are present but subordinate to the gourmand structure. And patchouli in high concentration balances the sweetness and provides that earthy contrast without which Angel would have turned into syrup.

🍑 Patchouli plus fruit — «fruitchouli». Angel became the forefather of the entire «fruitchouli» trend (fruity patchouli), one of the most commercially successful profiles in modern perfumery. Dozens of fragrances — from Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb to Paco Rabanne Lady Million — owe their existence to this formula.

💙 The bottle that changed everything. The blue liquid was the first in the history of perfumery. Before Angel, women’s fragrances were colored pink, beige, gold or left transparent. The star bottle was made in the workshop of Verreries Brosse (founded in 1854) — the same one that cast bottles for Chanel No. 5. According to one version, the star shape was suggested to Mugler by a fortune teller who saw stars on the lines of his palm. Angel became the first refillable bottle in perfumery — Mugler considered it sacrilege to throw away a «star» and launched the Source refill service.

🏆 Awards and scale. Angel received the FiFi Award Hall of Fame in 2007. In the first years after its release, it outsold Chanel No. 5 in several countries and has been selling at around 2 million bottles per year for three decades straight.
